Waterville Running Festival Is This Sunday: What Runners Need to Know

October 01, 2026•3 min read

The final MESA running festival of the 2026 season arrives this Sunday in Waterville.

The Waterville Running Festival takes place Sunday, October 4, 2026, with the Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K and 5K all scheduled to begin at 7:00 AM from Head of Falls Park in Waterville.

Whether you are running your first 5K, finishing your season with a marathon or supporting someone on the course, here are the details to know before race morning.

Four Distances. One Start Line.

Runners can choose from four distances: Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K and 5K.

All four races begin at Head of Falls Park at 7:00 AM.

The courses move through Waterville and along Main Street, with the longer distances continuing into Fairfield and through areas of Clinton and Benton before returning toward Waterville.

Returning runners cross the historic Two Cent Bridge as they make their way toward the finish.

Packet Pickup Is Saturday

Saturday packet pickup is scheduled for Saturday, October 3, from 3:00 PM–6:00 PM at The Maine Experience.

Race-morning packet pickup will also be available at the registration tent for runners who cannot pick up their materials Saturday.

If your schedule allows, picking up Saturday can make race morning simpler. Get your materials, confirm anything you need to know and remove one task from the early-morning checklist.

Race Morning Starts Early

With a 7:00 AM start, runners should plan backward.

Give yourself enough time to park, reach the start area, take care of any registration needs, warm up and settle in before the race begins.

Race morning is not the time to discover that you left something important at home.

Lay everything out Saturday night: shoes, socks, race clothing, bib, fuel, watch, and anything you regularly use during a race. Then check it again.

Using Personal Bottles?

MESA's current race information says runners who plan to use personal bottles may leave them at the operations tent in the starting area until 6:00 AM Sunday.

Those bottles will then be placed at designated water-station tables along the course.

If you use your own nutrition or hydration system, make sure this is part of your race-morning plan rather than an afterthought.

Don’t Change Everything in the Final Days

The work is essentially done.

This is not the week to squeeze in one more heroic workout. It is also not the time to experiment with new shoes, unfamiliar food or an entirely different race strategy.

Trust your training. Move enough to stay comfortable. Get some rest. Eat foods you already know work for you. Stay hydrated. And arrive at the start line ready to use the fitness you have already built.

Marathon and Half Marathon Runners May Have More on the Line

Waterville is also part of two MESA challenge programs.

Runners who complete qualifying Marathon or Half Marathon distances at both Augusta and Waterville may qualify for Run the Moose recognition.

The Vacationland Triple Crown recognizes runners who complete Marathon or Half Marathon events at three of MESA's four 2026 running festivals.

For some runners, Waterville will therefore be more than the final race of the season. It may also complete a season-long challenge.

Bring the Family

The Waterville Running Festival is designed as more than a start-and-finish-line event.

The finish area is expected to include vendors and activities for runners, families and guests.

MESA events depend on runners, volunteers, spectators, community organizations and local partners working together to create the race-day experience.

Even if you're not racing, there is still a place for you on Sunday. Volunteer. Cheer. Support a runner. Spend some time in Waterville.

One More Start Line

Bangor started the season. Augusta carried it into summer. Lincoln brought runners into September. And now Waterville closes out MESA's 2026 running-festival calendar.

Different distances. Different goals. Different reasons for being there.

But on Sunday morning, everybody begins in the same place: At the start line.

We'll see you in Waterville.
